Twice every year – once during September as the leaves change color and again at the end of May as summer draws close – throngs of fans, audiophiles, and regular people descend upon City Hall Plaza for Boston Calling.
The event has hosted countless musical acts through its history, from big-name worldwide superstars such as Fun. and Twenty-One Pilots, to lesser-known indie acts like The Avett Brothers and Sufjan Stevens.
Now, Crash Line Productions are at it again with their lineup for the Spring 2016 incarnation of Boston Calling. Unlike past years, this year’s May Boston Calling focuses much on independent acts, with the only “mainstream” performers being Sia, HAIM, and Elle King (full lineup is at the bottom of this article). While most of the other performers have toured nationally, none of them are what could be considered “mainstream” – that is, receiving near-constant airtime over the radio or breaking sales records with their albums. No, these artists are all homegrown, all business, and all talent.
However, this year, Crash Line is doing something else a bit different. For the first time ever, Boston Calling will have three stages – a main stage, a secondary stage, and the Verizon stage. The main and secondary stages will host only musical acts across all three days of the festival, while the Verizon stage will host mostly comedy acts as well as two musical acts per day on Saturday and Sunday. The Verizon stage is also only hosting local performers – the Master of Ceremonies, Lamont Price, is a born-and-raised Bostonian, as well as a self-proclaimed “Connect 4 and Super Mario Kart Champion” (from his Twitter page, @LPizzle). During Saturday and Sunday, the Verizon stage will host six Bostonian comedians, including Price himself.
