Art: Different Mediums to Express Social Justice and Racial Equality

The poem, “Harlem,” by Langston Hughes.

I wanted to express the different mediums in which social justice and racial equality have been fought for throughout the years — through the Civil Rights Movement and now BLM. In my mind, the easiest way to describe the BLM movement is to connect it to topics we learned in history and english class during our schooling at BC High. That way, we can use a single familiar platform to reach a lot of students at our school. One piece of literature that we have studied in class is the poem, “Harlem,” by Langston Hughes. I wanted to evoke that these forms of protests happen because minorities are continually oppressed by others. And, that these peaceful protests are results of dreams deferred.
