I attended a Students for Soldiers meeting recently, and it is certainly a club with great intentions. Their goal is to honor, serve, and show appreciation to the 1% of Americans who serve our country. During the meeting, members discussed plans for this year on how they are going to execute these goals. One way will be with CarePacks, a non-profit organization that makes and sends care packages to deployed troops around the world. Students for Soldiers will be volunteering at three CarePack sessions in November on the 4th, 18th, and 23rd, where they will pack, sort, and make cards for the holiday season. Additionally, a Cell Phones for Soldiers drive will be held here at BC High very soon. If you have any old phones, broken or working, then do not hesitate to donate them. They are recycled to companies that give free cell minutes, so that troops can call home without racking up a massive bill. This program was created by Robbie Bergquist, a BC High alum who might even speak at one of the meetings. Robert Bergquist spoke two years ago at BCH, and Students for Soldiers hosted his talk. Every year they host a speaker in Bulger during 2nd period. Last year, they invited Captain Tom Kelley ‘56, a Medal of Honor recipient. Later in the year, club members will work with My Brothers Keeper and continue to appreciate those who protect us everyday.
