In the midst of the BC High community is a group of eager minds who gather and break the barriers of traditional education to explore the intricate world of medicine and science.
The St. Luke’s Medical Society, a club filled with curiosity, has become more than just a club; it’s a nurturing ground for aspiring science enthusiasts. For this reason, it’s odd that a club that would seem to be such a hit among students has seemingly seeped through the cracks and fallen into the pile that is most clubs at BC High.
Founded on the principle of sharing the love for medicine with all, this society offers a place for individuals eager to delve into the mysteries of the human body and the wonders of science, and I think that for these reasons, the club deserves a lot more recognition than what it actually gets.
The club presidents this year, Ryan O’Malley and Brady Lane, agree that St. Luke’s is a club that would love to see more members join. St. Luke’s Medical Society stands as a testament to the power of hands-on learning and inspirational leadership. Brady Lane said, “The idea of the club is to share our love with medicine with everyone. Oftentimes there are few classes that relate to medicine so it’s hard to know if it’s for you. Our club gives participants an insight into various sectors of the medical field, and into other areas of science like research, nursing, or bio-engineering.”
The society has engaging activities from suturing bananas to listening to guest speakers talk about their life work, all while teaching students more about medicine. The club opens its doors to everyone, regardless of their career aspirations, fostering an inclusive environment where learning is inevitable.
I attended a meeting myself, where I was given the opportunity to learn about the incredible work of Dr. Seers, one of the many science teachers here at BC High. If you would like to have a similar opportunity Ryan, Brady, and the rest of the club would love to see you at meetings every 1st and 3rd Thursday morning of the month in I211. The already existing members, as well as the presidents of the club provide a platform where knowledge is shared, and dreams are nurtured.
St. Luke’s Medical Society offers a reassuring message: this isn’t just about becoming a doctor. It’s about understanding oneself and the marvels of the human body. The club encourages members to embrace their curiosity, debunk myths and prove that anyone can appreciate the intricate world of medicine, regardless of their career path.
In a world often defined by boundaries, St. Luke’s Medical Society stands as a testament to the limitless power of curiosity and the joy of learning. Ryan O’Malley said, “Whether you are interested in cardiovascular surgery, the development of vaccines, or utterly terrified of needles, St. Luke’s serves to act as a crucible for all these attitudes, exploring the fascinating insight medicine can offer everyone and rejoicing over an experience known to us all, the very act of living.”
Aspiring scientists, doctors, and healthcare professionals find their home here, where passion is celebrated, knowledge is accessible, and every question is met with encouragement. Join the society on this exhilarating journey of self-discovery and exploration. Together, let’s inspire the next generation of medical geniuses.
