How did you end up as the mascot of BC High?

I was in a student council meeting junior year, and the question was brought up. Nobody else seemed interested, so I thought I’d give it a shot. Soon I found myself being briefed by Ms. Carter.

What’s something that a lot of people don’t consider about the job?

A lot of younger kids get frightened by the costume. Either that or they find it hilarious. Kind of like the Easter bunny. Other than that, I think that people believe that the identity of the eagle is a secret. That’s really only a thing for colleges.

Does it get hot in the suit?

It’s going to get hot in there. They tell you to take breaks every hour or so. It’s actually great on a winter day, imagine a winter coat, thick gloves, and the heat cranked up to 90. But on a normal day it’s not always fun.

What are your official duties as a mascot?

To raise school spirit. I try to go out there and get people hyped for the games. I also try to take pictures for social media.

What do you enjoy most about being the eagle?

I love being close to the action. Interacting with people is great, seeing people’s faces light up – it means a lot to me.

Do you have a particularly memorable game?

I remember my first event pretty well. It was a home football game, one of the first of the year. I had some help getting suited up, and then I was getting a feel for it by the end. Lots of energy from the crowd.

How does it feel to follow in the footsteps of some other great eagles?

It’s tough shoes to fill. The eagles before me have this great legacy and it’s hard to follow, but I’m doing my best. I want to carry it forward, like being a senior mentor or house captain. It’s a job you can have fun with, and it’s important for the school.

How’s your vision in the suit?

Not great. I recall bumping into President Regan by accident one time. Another time I fell down some stairs. Highly recommend having a person with you to help guide you.

Finally… A burning question that’s on everyone’s mind: What does the E stand for?

Don’t know. Electric? Sure.
